We suggest you allow extra travel time to make sure you arrive at the Ranch during daylight hours… especially if this is your first time! Depending on which direction you come from, you will pass through either the mountain town of Creede or Lake City, which will be your (somewhat limited) last opportunity for gas and supplies.
If you are using a navigation system or Google Maps, be sure to type “Cabins at Lost Trail” in your search bar… NOT “Lost Trail Ranch”. We are on usfs road 520, not 509. Some maps on the Internet and older GPS units get a little confused on this. Please ask in advance if you need some additional help with your journey, as your cell reception will end before you reach us! Put Beka’s cell in your phone now ☺
If you are coming in from Creede, follow Hwy 149 through and out of Creede towards Lake City… travel just under 20 miles and turn left onto usfs rd 520/co-18. Also called Rio Grande Reservoir Road. This left turn is “Freemon’s Ranch” (burgers and Ice cream ☺ – yes please!).
If you are coming in from Lake City, you will travel 30 miles before turning right onto usfs rd 520/co-18. Also called Rio Grande Reservoir Road.
Once on usfs rd 520/co-18/ Rio Grande Reservoir Road, you have 18 miles to go (maintained dirt road). Your first point of reference will be San Juan Ranch on the left. Keep going! Once you pass a few more landmarks like the two Road Canyon Reservoirs (fishing areas), some amazing curves (that might make you squirm a little bit), River Hill Campground and Thirty Mile Campground, you then will come to the enormous (almost 7 miles long!) Rio Grande Reservoir. Once you have reached the west/upper end of the reservoir you will pass the Ute Trail head area, then Ski High on the left. You are almost there! Continue down 520 until you see the Lost Trail Campground on your left. Once you go over the small bridge (Lost Trail Creek), Cabins at Lost Trail will be the next left. Look for our gate/sign, and WELCOME!
Please keep in mind that we are remote. Come prepared with whatever you may need for your vehicle… spare tire, proper equipment, fix-a flat, power packs, car blanket, car charger adapter, jumper cables etc. Again, it’s ideal to arrive during daylight.
